The Great War AAR 1st July 1916 Hawthorn Crater

Image
On Sunday Ninjasaurus Rex and I played another game of The Great War . As it is nearly the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, we played the scenario based on the attempted capture of the mine crater at Hawthorn Ridge. It also happens that this spot is my favourite part of the Somme battlefield; I took this picture looking back from the Hawthorn crater, over the British front lines: The scenario was based on 29th Divisions assault on the crater left by the mine explosion, but despite destroying the position, the German defence was strong enough to stop the attack. Also included in the scenario is the sunken lane, which was the jumping off point for the 1st Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers, whose attack was stopped by German machine gun fire and an area of dead ground that had not be recognised before they attacked.  The game was set up, I took the British attackers and Ninjasaurus took the German defences. Both of us had to gain six victory points to...

The Battle of Tummar West 8th December 1940 AAR

Image
In our continuing Operation Compass campaign, hosted by Dean the third engagement was the Battle of Tummar West, when the 7th Royal Tank Regiment attacked the Italian defenders in a fort. The attack commenced after an hour long artillery bombardment and the defenders capitulated in just over two hours of fighting.  This battlefield was a bit busier than the previous battles, with a village lying in the path of the British (along with four refuelling Italian tanks) and two minefields. The fort was also protected by barbed wire and dug in Italian anti-tank guns.   I took the British and had an ad hoc force of tanks, armoured cars, 2lber portees and some infantry. The Italians consisted of native troops in the fort, a scattering of AFVs and some Blackshirt infantry. I had to capture at least three points worth of the objectives to win, the fort was worth two points alone, along with two other objectives. Ninjasaurus took his Italian defenders again and Dean umpired the game ...

The Battle of the Slim River 5th 7th January 1942 AAR

Image
On Saturday we played another scenario in our ongoing Malaya campaign; the Battle of the Slim River (crikey, its been over a year since we played the last scenario!). This action was fought between the 5th and 7th of January 1942. The initial Japanese probes on the morning of the 5th came to nothing and the British forces began to fall back to the south. However, during the withdrawal the Japanese forces fell on the defending 4/19th Hyperabad and 5/2nd Punjabs. The Japanese attackers included tanks and engineers and managed to get through the Indian line to cause mayhem amongst the British artillery of the 137th Field Battery, 5/14th Punjab Regiment and 2/1st Gurkha Rifles, destroying or scattering all these formations. Finally they achieved the capture of the bridge over the Slim River and the British defeat here lead to the loss of central Malaya to the Japanese invaders.
